Completing the Sale

Successful working relations between producers and dealers follow a definite pattern. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Pricing of hay. Selling by the bale is best for small loads, such as farm trucks and pickups. However, for larger loads, such as semitrailers, selling by the ton is fairer to both buyer and seller.
When a producer insists that he be paid by the bale, instead of by weight, the buyer usually lowers his offering price to cover his risk in guessing the weight of the load.
  1. Loading out the truck. It is customary for the producer to get the hay or straw onto the truck and for the trucker to stack the load.
To greatly reduce the labor of getting hay and straw from the barn, use a small, portable bale elevator. The dealer (or his representative) will want the right to sort undesirable bales during loading. He will toss out those that are extra dusty (moldy), extra light, extra heavy (probably wet), weedy, too grassy, etc.
